چکیده

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young athletes is always dramatic, because unexpected, and is sometimes a challenge to investigate. The prevalence is estimated at 0.6 per 100,000 in the United States. Coronary anomalies are the second most common cause of SCD in young athletes (16%) but are, unfortunately, difficult to recognize before a serious clinical event. Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome accounts for only 1.6% of all SCD. We present the case of a young athlete with aborted SCD and both WPW syndrome and an anomalous right coronary artery (RCA) origin.

We present a 16-year-old patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome admitted with syncope and aborted sudden cardiac death. Electrocardiography showed only a short PR interval without a delta wave. The QRS transition zone was on V2 in the precordial leads. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory cardiac rhythm monitoring showed an obvious delta wave only at night-time. Electrophysiologic testing was perfo...

A Novel SCN5A Mutation in a Patient with Coexistence of Brugada Syndrome Traits and Ischaemic Heart Disease

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a primary electrical heart disease, which can lead to sudden cardiac death. In older patients with BrS, the disease may coexist with ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and recent studies support a synergistic proarrhythmic effect of the two disease entities. We report a case that illustrates this. The index patient was a middle-aged patient with BrS traits, IHD, and aborted...

Clinical presentations range from no symptoms to a sudden cardiac arrest. The risk of sudden death is always present with ...

Repeated Aborted Sudden Cardiac Death with Long QT Syndrome in a Patient with Anomalous Origin of the Right Coronary Artery from the Left Coronary Cusp

A 15-year-old female with a prior history of aborted cardiac death and surgical correction of anomalous origin of the right coronary artery (RCA) presented with polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. Her electrocardiogram after defibrillation was suggestive of congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS). The patient was treated with a β-blocker and remained free from ventricular arrhythmia during the foll...
